« Nous, soussignés, membres d’un grand nombre d’organisations de la société civile, nourries du même esprit, représentant des organisations d’agriculteurs, de consommateurs et d’acteurs environnementaux, venus de dix-neuf pays africains et soutenus par quatre pays non africains, nous sommes réunis les 27, 28 et 29 septembre 2005 à Nairobi (Kenya), pour un séminaire d’élaboration et d’adoption de stratégies sur les Organismes Génétiquement Modifiés (OGM) dans l’agriculture africaine. Nous référant aux débats du séminaire, déclarons ce qui suit. »

D’après GRAIN et beaucoup d’autres groupes civiles, les cultures GM sont complètement incompatibles avec la souveraineté alimentaire. Cet article décrit les effets d’un lobby pro-OGM très offensif sur la législation de la biosécurité dans les pays africains, asiatiques et du Amérique Latin. Pourtant, il souligne aussi les mouvements sociales en opposition de plus en plus mobilisés et sophistiqués.
