Three years after the war, reconciliation remains a distant dream as the government and the Tamil National Alliance engage in political posturing. Meanwhile, ordinary Tamils struggle to rebuild their lives, culture and identity, battling the fatigue of 30 years of conflict and neglect.

Three years after the Sri Lankan military defeated the LTTE in an operation in which its leader Velupillai Prabakaran was also killed, there are enough remnants of that operation strewn around in that 40 square kilometre patch of land to underline the moment in Sri Lanka’s history that marked the end of three decades of Tamil militancy. With the LTTE out of the way, it should have also been the beginning of a new chapter of reconciliation between the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamils, and the even smaller minority of Muslims. [...] That chapter has proved difficult for all sides to begin scripting.
