The Five W’s

OtherWords distributes commentary and cartoons aimed at amplifying progressive analysis in the national conversation. It empowers readers to become more engaged citizens.

The publication-ready columns, op-eds, and cartoons on this website are available free of charge, as long as the author(s) and OtherWords are cited as the source for this work.

About 1,700 newspaper editors subscribe to our weekly editorial package that consists of three columns, four op-eds, and one cartoon. Most of our subscribers are small dailies and weeklies in America’s heartland. We have found that at least 175 newspapers run our work, with a combined circulation of 3.5 million. Formerly known as Minuteman Media, OtherWords became part of the Institute for Policy Studies in 2010.

Our History

William A. Collins, a former mayor of Norwalk, Connecticut, founded Minuteman Media in 1998. He remains one of this syndicate’s weekly columnists, but in 2010, the Institute for Policy Studies took over its management and Minuteman Media was renamed OtherWords.

IPS is a community of public scholars and organizers linking peace, justice, and the environment in the U.S. and globally. We work with social movements to promote true democracy and challenge concentrated wealth, corporate influence, and military power.

IPS and OtherWords are nonprofit organizations. We rely on grants from foundations and tax-deductible contributions from individuals. If you would like to contribute, please click here or contact us at otherwords@ips-dc.org for more information.
